On February 3rd, 1883 there was an auction of art works and writing to support the building of a pedestal on Liberty Island. In the first seven lines she named the statue “The Mother of Exiles.” After the statue was in place the poem was published in Pulitzer’s New York World and The New York Times, resulting in the plaque on the interior wall of the pedestal.
